Description
This song could be used to introduce students to the gradual shift away from the pastoral way of rural southern life that once dominated the region and the New Deal. The south had traditionally been more agrarian than the north and the songwriter Bob McDill illustrates this shift throughout the song. "Song of the South" follows the story of a struggling cotton farmer who benefits from some of the programs initiated by FDR. The music video makes great use of the medium by splicing historic footage of farmers suffering from the Dust Bowl with footage of the few individuals who managed to stay wealthy during the depression.
