Description
This song can be used to introduce students to the influence that Appalachian music had on modern country music. Many early country songs were based on British ballads and were combined with musical influences from African-American musical traditions and other groups which settled the area. Moreover, the song serves as another example of deploying the common theme of nostalgia, an example being a reference to an old but popular minstrel song, "Carry Me Back to Virginny." The song follows the story of someone reminiscing about their home in the mountains whilst being far away. Clinch Mountain is a reference to the Clinch Mountains of Tennessee and Virginia.
