Description

Many of those living in the Appalachians can trace their heritage back to England and Scotland, where they have a longstanding folk song tradition. As the song has no definitive author/s, several versions of this song exist as it was common to alter a select few words to shift the context and/or region. For instance, Lead Belly's iteration was based on a version published by Cecil Sharp and was often recorded under the title, "Black Gal". A common thread between all the iterations is a focus on misery.
