Cholera in Haiti

On October 21, 2010, the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population reported a cholera epidemic had broken out in the country. This was surprising because no such outbreak had been reported in Haiti for over a century. The epidemic may have been related to the deadly earthquake Haiti had experienced months earlier, but after rigorous investigation it was concluded that incoming UN Nepalese peacekeepers were responsible for importing cholera. A cholera outbreak was indeed reported in Nepal’s capital city of Kathmandu in 2010, shortly before troops left for Haiti, and the strain was an exact match. The Haitian epidemiologists observed sanitary deficiencies, including a pipe discharging sewage from the camp into the nearby river villagers used for cooking and drinking. According to data from the Ministry of Public Health and Population, between October 2010 to December 2018, 819,000 people showed signs of the disease and 9,700 died of cholera.
